Have you ever tried to disconnect from the digital world (or read a book on the subject.)

Everything is in the title!
I am currently reading a book on this subject.
Good night to you!

I can’t understand why I’d want to.

I meant, if it is something addictive and takes up all the space in life.
(I was giving the example of smartphone notifications, social networks etc.)

I would be bored out of my mind if completely disconnected from the digital world. I spend good chunk of my time on it.

It improves my life immeasurably.

I read a book about the information overflow, but that was over 25 years ago. I can’t remember the details anymore.

I had gone 90 days without internet in 2014. Should have continued it. Just getting online for work.

Not easy stopping tech use right now.

I have done it partially because I have been struggling with internet addiction all my life.

I don’t have a smartphone. And I have a software installed on my desktop that helps me getting good routines for using the net. For instance I have made it so that I can’t use my computer between midnight and 8am.

I also started writing down things by pencil if there are things I need to do on the internet. So that I can accumulate a few tasks beforehand, instead of turning to my computer every time something pops into my head.

I would probably do a complete disconnect if it was possible to live without a computer. But at a minimum you need it for banking, mail and a few other vital functions.

I think it would be more appealing to join a mental health club if I didn’t have internet, and also be more active socialising and excersising and doing other activities that I never seem to find the time to because internet takes up too much of my time.

Thank you very much for you long post.
Could you tell me the name of the software that shut down the computer or disconnect of internet between midnight and 8am ?
Do you know if the program is impossible to deactivate ? (that would suit me.)

It’s cold turkey blocker. You can find it at getcoldturkey.com. It only works on desktops and laptops though. Not on mobile devices and tablets.

To get the feature that can lock your computer(frozen turkey) you would have to buy the licensed version. The good news is that it’s a one time fee only. Anyways you can visit the webpage and read about what the software can do. You can also block websites, make whitelist only, block apps ++.

I don’t think it’s possible to bypass it, unless maybe you have a degree in programming or are a skilled hacker.

Thank you. I heard about this software at the time…
I really should consider to use it.
I can imagine that the price is acceptable.

On the other hand, I had an app that was doing exactly the same for android devices but I never found one that prevents it from deactivating itself.
If you know an app that does that, I would be very grateful.

Why dont u want deactivation?
Internet addiction is about being stubborn not to.
Not only software.

The best thing I found for mobile devices is boomerang parental control. But it’s not 100%.

Sorry for the mistake.
I didn’t understood you post…

I agree. In the end you will need willpower. But software can be a great tool to replace bad habits with good ones.

Microsoft and other tech companies are doing everything they can to make their software as addictive as possible. They are exploiting humans weak points. I think it’s great that there are some dedicated people out there that fights to give us software that does the opposite.

As sad as it is, it is my only connection to other human beings… I live alone and in isolation. I honestly don’t want it in my life, but it gives me some meaning. So.

I’m sorry you are isolated like that. That must be so hard on you. I’m really glad you found the forum.
