That took… Months… Once I started seeing through the fog and a real need arose I did get it sorted out. Putting my raspberry pi to work as the host of the HoloNet.
It’s pretty sweet. I can stream steam to non-local computers and I gotta say that networking is starting to make sense.
Subnets are all local. Every computer on the local end of a modem shares the same ip when it comes to dealig with the outside world. The router tracks what data came from where and where it’s going when it comes back… Pretty neat.
Latency is an issue and this ■■■■ is not secured at all beyond layers of passwords. Don’t even really know what to do with it except pass credentials to my friends and try to see who wants to play some halo or seven kingdoms. I’ll probably have to configure their connections myself but it’s really not to bad of a process.
Just got to disable using the connection’s default gateway to avoid trying to us internet through the vpn… And also they’d have to allow their device to be seen by others inside the vlan… It ain’t that bad. Just two settings that are pretty accesible.
I’ve also configured two routers to work in tandem… That was a trip. Also flashed a router with dd-wrt… Which I’m not using any more because the other non-flashable had stronger wifi.
Got my nerd ■■■■ goig right now… I feel kind of accomplished though. Wanted to share. Some have you may remember me being frustrated with this a few months ago.
The HoloNet lives!
Most devices come with built-in ability to connect to VPNs. So it’ll be a pretty sweet underground gaming network. I know a couple of my friends will likely connect.
Virtual private network… It’s supposed to operate as a virtual local area network or also as a means of self-proxying.
You dial into a self hosted server either to complicate your internet requests so that can’t be as easily decyphered or so that you can connect with other computers on your home network for file transfers or other activities that typically require a LAN connection(gaming mainly.)
@shutterbug i’ll try and remeber to pm you a few photos.
I’ll keep cracking away at this. I’m loving the bakery job for now. If I work and get a decent raise and more hours or even a promotion then I should be able to support myself with it.
Aside from that I’m still finding time to work on video games and what not.
Steady as she goes you know… Lot’s of progress this year already.
A virtual private server (VPS) is a virtual server that the user perceives as a dedicated/private server even though it is installed on a physical computer running multiple operating systems.
So I think VPS and VPN are two different concepts.
It would seem so… But there could be an overlap where a virtual private network is being hosted by a virtual private server… Creme de la creme it could be running on a computer which has been isolated to a virtual lan…
