I was just beginning to grow up when the movement went into full swing (Little Rock, Rosa Parks, etc.) It was exciting, embarrassing, and frightening all rolled into one.

I mostly remember my parents’ reactions - typical middle class white Christian southerners - not too bad, not too good. Leaving me caught there in the middle, too. It’s so hard to get out.
