Grapefruit my favourite

Those who take aripoprazole, has any of your professional team told you not to eat grapefruit.

My pharmacist says there MAY be a risk.

I bought 9 grapefruits yesterday and so far eaten 2 :pensive:

I don’t know if this is going to land me in trouble.

I just like grapefruit so much :sob:

I am also going to call a different pharmacist now.

But it would be nice to hear further professional opinions from you peeps…

Not a professional, but I don’t eat grapefruit because multiple pdocs have told me not to. I do like grapefruit though so that’s a bummer.

Most antipsychotics mean you can’t have grapefruit.

It messes with how the liver metabolises the AP, and can put you in danger of relapsing or accidentally overdosing.

I’m allergic anyways, so I wouldn’t eat it regardless.

If you’re in doubt, look at the papers that come with the pill box. They usually state what you can’t do while on the pills

My most local pharmacist says it’s safe. I just called them.

So idk.

I guess I’ll eat these 9 grapefruits.

And then stop buying them anyway just to be on the safe side.

I’m not sure which of my drugs said not to eat grapefruit with it but I think it was my Atorvastatin. I don’t know about my Aripiprazole. Either way, I can’t eat grapefruit with my drugs either.

" · Notes for Consumers: Tell your health care provider if you drink grapefruit juice regularly. An interaction between Aripiprazole and Grapefruit juice is possible, but they may be used together. Grapefruit juice may change the amount of Aripiprazole in the blood. If you drink Grapefruit juice regularly, do not change how often or how much grapefruit juice you drink until you talk to your health care provider. If you experience nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, tremor or other unusual effect, contact your health care provider."

This was for grapefruit juice and not eating grapefruit though.

Thanks Bowens.

I think I better call another pharmacist or two to double check.

I called 3 more pharmacists.

One of them said no.

The other said no significant interaction.

Third said there may be a risk.

How ridiculous is this.

I love grapefruits. I started eating it a year ago, no problems. I am on risperdal. I found a pdf online that shows with what it interacts and the degree of interaction. My drs never told me to not eat grapefruit. I had one yesterday.

I guess Ziprasidone is the only ap that has the highest interaction, intermediate. The pdf is from the Canadian Medical Association 2012.

You really need to talk to your doctor.

“Grapefruit and grapefruit juice inhibit CYP3A4 metabolism in gut enterocytes, and therefore may decrease aripiprazole metabolism, resulting in increased blood concentrations of aripiprazole. Patients should not significantly adjust their intake of grapefruit or grapefruit juice while taking aripiprazole. As with drugs that significantly inhibit the CYP3A4 pathway, consideration should be given to altering the aripiprazole dose.”

The document doesn’t have aps that were released after 2012 though.

It says marijuana has a major interaction with Abilify in your link. It made me psychotic but even without the Abilify. I guess its bad for psychosis

Yea I decided to give all my grapefruit to my family in the end.

Because this enzyme is apparently required for aripoprazole processing.

So the grapefruit would perhaps interfere with aripoprazole processing.

I’m pretty sensitive to medication so therefore a small change could have a bad effect.

I guess thats the safer option. Personally I never had an issue and have been eating lots of grapefruits and drinking lots of grapefruit juice during the past year.

Different sources have different information like you said.

Yea it looks like you do okay with it. I’m just concerned cos I’m quite sensitive to med side effects

Silly move.

Grapefruit reacts with risperidone by increasing it up to 700%. Dangerous and stupid to eat or drink it.
