I think having a disorder makes you feel more emotion so you express it more. I think everyone has the potential to create. But people who are sad just use it as a coping skill. Some excel, others dont. I dont think it has anything to do with being a genius. Just the opposite really. I think disability does just that. Disables you from acheiving your full potential.
Also, check low latent inhibition and creativity. Ironically, a lower latent inhibition is also correlated with schizophrenia. There is indeed a direct connection.
A lot of people at this forum are okay to struggling therefore they will be skeptical of such claims. Remember, geniuses are very, very rare-- so it is unlikely for us to find a genius at this forum. But, I wouldn’t be surprised if geniuses are found in a higher proportion in people who are mentally ill. They are probably not here-- busy making great art and great science.
Not true. My dad is a genius. I.Q.-wise. It’s really too hard to define what a genius is, anyway. You could go with I.Q. tests, but those may or may not indicate much. Genius is subjective. To measure one’s intelligence, there’s really not sure way to determine that. Probably should go more with what a person has accomplished or can accomplish.
Creativity isn’t measured by IQ tests. Creativity is a type of intelligence that some people describe as “remote associations”, and the only way to measure it is to look at the results of all the maundering people do. Albert Einstein believed that creativity is more important than intelligence.
In comparative terms, and taken as a group, they function better than those with schizophrenia. That,as you rightly said, doesn’t mean that all are high functioning.
With Bipolar it is not that bad. The reason being that, there are no negative symptoms or cognitive symptoms. However, deep depression can hurt. But, I have depression too as SZA- Bipolar type. If managed well by medications, and only when the symptoms are controlled by medications, bipolars can live fairly productive lives. There is more evidence of creativity associated with Bipolar than schizophrenia. People who have a LLI are prone to schizophrenia, but they are more creative without schizophrenia. So, schizophrenia itself destroys creativity and all ability, but things that are correlated with schizophrenia are consistent with a higher creative potential. Perhaps, schizo genes are correlated with those genes that have a higher creativity, but the disorder itself doesn’t lead to creativity. That would also explain in evolutionary terms why schizophrenia hasn’t been wiped out at a genetic level.
Well, if you type on google so and so, you will find research that supports your line of thought.
I have two cousins who have either depressive psychotic or manic psychotic episodes with Bipolar Disorder. You can’t believe how quick one is in terms of processing speed. If there are any such deficits, they are very mild compared to schizophrenia.
You have posted above someone’s blog which says that high IQ is consistent with creativity. High IQ people are, according to scientific research, considered as gifted, not geniuses. Geniuses are simply, what looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, is a duck. It is extremely rare and is associated with high level of creative achievement. IQ is very slightly associated with creativity.
I already had those. Just posted the links as you were providing inaccurate info. Anyone who’s remotely knowledgeable about the subject, i.e not you, knows that high IQ plays a part when it comes to being a genius but is not sufficient by itself for a person to be a genius.
