I’m a bit worried about it so i’m trying to just wrap up instead of putting my heating on, the gas price has rocketed apparently, I think i feel better bc i am with British Gas, i also feel better about having BT phone & broadband, maybe its just me but i kind of trust them more than anybody else.
I am trying to plan ahead in-case i get hit with an outrageous bill, and Christmas could be a bit depressing here in uk this year with all the shortages, but i am just hoping and praying everything works out ok, the whole world feels like it is on a shaky nail atm tbh
If i was even savvier i’d be saving money on food/drink but i keep getting take away and coffee it all adds up
You know, there is actually a way to solve the gas crisis. You can make literal gasoline with a carbon scrubber and hydrogen split from ocean water via cold electrolysis (the electrodes don’t corrode like this, amazingly. Not even in ocean water.) Gasoline is basically just hydrocarbon. Just need a ruthenium catalyst to combine the hydrogen and scrubbed carbon dioxide. The catalyst isn’t consumed either.
Energy to do this is a problem, but overunity devices exist. This will be a thing at some point.
I don’t know how this compares to other countries but when this pandemic first hit gas(petro) prices crashed. The cheapest was $0.69/Litre where I live (Ontario, Canada), it’s currently around $1.30/Litre and now I hear gas is soon going to shoot up to $1.50/Litre. I’ve never seen it that high. This really sucks because while I love everything about my minivan, it does guzzle gas. It’s capable of running on E85 Ethanol but that isn’t available anywhere around here that I know of.
luckily i had my boiler checked recently and i just remembered i am on a fixed tariff until Jun 23 so i gue bills wont alter (in theory) but i am still going to use as little as i can and then the only thing taht i actually hate with all my might is that my car is petrol,
@naturallycured it all sounds very interesting and my engineer said that all the infrastructure is in place to convert to some sort of hyrogen thing but idk much about it and its a bit far off,
my main concern atm is the environment, I have been thinking about it alot and praying about it to myself asking for some help from above lol
@Headspark do you guys get natural gas piped into your homes? we have a shortage here in the uk, I’m not sure whats going on with petrol but i heard they had shortages and the price may go up as well, it might be a distribution issue (not enough drivers) but i’m not sure.
Yeah, we do have natural gas for various things. Furnace, water heater, and we have a gas stove downstairs but it isn’t hooked up and we don’t use it.
Canada has ample oil and gas under the ground, we have the third largest reserves in the world after Saudi Arabia and Venezuela, especially in the province of Alberta, but there is a constant battle between environmentalists and oil companies, involving the government and courts over getting it out of the ground and building pipelines.
I asked my council if we could have solar panels fitted on to our roof but now i dont think they will do it, i think i might try and chase them up but they have bigger problems atm, it would be great to harness the power of the sun and bring bills down, the uk tries really hard to use renewable energy but natural gas supplies are very low, we get some from Ireland and the North sea but it is topped up from elsewhere and it is these other suppliers that are increasing their prices (i think)
I’m pretty sure the pandemic has caused a fragile economy worldwide. Here in the USA prices are skyrocketing in everything. Food/lumber. I used to pay $2 fee to pay my water bill online. That was last month’s bill. This month my fee was $3.25. Taco Bell’s prices have even gone up.
In Canada gas is just short for gasoline (for your car) and then we have natural gas into our homes. but a lot of people just use the term “gas” when talking about both.
I got lucky with mine. I did a fixed price tariff with Scottish Power for 2 years , Online, direct-debit, paperless with a £120 exit fee in August. Been with them for years.
British Gas btw - are notoriously expensive. When you change supplier, its not always wise to go for the latest fly-by-night energy company, you want a middle of the road one. Cos as ive been proved, alot of them have gone bust.
I will add as well. That if your claiming benefits, like the legacy ESA / PIP or universal credit in the uk, most energy companys offer a government backed “Warm Home Discount” of £140 off your bill. You have to apply for it every year tho - and is paid out before march in the new year.
All i would say is, make sure your on the priority register with your energy company as well as your water company. If you got a massive bill you cant afford - they are always more lenient with you.
