Food waste(USA)

Perfectly good food is being thrown away because it doesn’t meet unrealistic standards of appearance. In the United States, where more than one-tenth of all families are living in food-insecure households, at least 40 percent of the food produced for consumption is never eaten.

The sad truth is that there is enough food to feed the nation’s hungry several times over, but companies let the majority of surplus food end up in the trash or rot in warehouses. It doesn’t have to be this way! After France banned its supermarkets from wasting unsold food, mandating that they donate the items to charities and food banks instead, the country found itself wasting only about 234 pounds of food annually while their American counterparts are throwing away more than 250 pounds of food per person per year.

Please sign our petition to tell Congress to require restaurants and grocers to donate food rather than waste it! A simple regulation could change lives!

I used to work in a fast food place that refused to donate their food. Instead, we had to throw it in a locked bin, under the supervision of a manager, to prove we weren’t secretly taking the food home to eat. It was revolting. Another place I worked donated all their leftovers, and I really liked that.

You realize there’s a reason why they do all of this right? :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Petitions have little effect, basically anyone in the world can sign one. The best thing to do is contact your local representative or senator, and tell them that this issue matters to you. If enough people in their district are up in arms over this, they may vote accordingly. When it comes to USA politics, the best thing to do is to think locally and vote every special election and midterm election.

That said, I used to work at a bakery that donated all the food to shelters and stuff. Was nice, and I approved, but I would’ve liked to take home a bear claw myself…

In Alaska the food bank gets to process the meat from moose that are killed on roadways. I always like when my food box has mooseburger in it. Never thought I’d be eating roadkill!

Alright, I signed it. I’ve heard different things about petitio0ns and it’s hard to tell who knows their stuff when you’ve got a ping pong ball for a brain like me

I signed it. Whether or not it makes any difference, it only took a second and if they bombard me with unnecessary emails, I can unsubscribe.

A lot of the problem is access to grocery stores. The distance is far too great for some places that is more practical to buy ■■■■■■■■ from fast food or convenience stores. These areas are called food deserts.

But even when people have money to buy good food, they often opt for the ■■■■■■■■.

What is the reason? I’m sure I’ve heard it mentioned before but I forgot.

Technically they say the can’t give away the food since if someobody gets sick they could sue.

However I feel like hunger is an easily solved issue, even world hunger could be solved by something like 30 billion a year (very very cheap in the grand scheme of things, especially if you take into consideration that the US military budget for this year is over 800 billion)

So since nobody has solved this issue, i believe it must be because of some sort of population control, or just greed.

Providing the additional calories needed by the 13% of the world’s population facing hunger would require just 1% of the current global food supply. That redistribution has not already taken place which is truly something to be ashamed of.

There’s other things we can do to as developed countries, such as stopping eating so much meat. (40% of grain crops are going to fatten up livestock and fish, which we eat)

There’s other reasons too but I’m still to tired to properly explain them.

Bottom line: most hunger in the world exists because as a species, people suck.

Yeah I thought that was what I heard before. A lot of things are because corporations are narcissistic. They sabotage African countries development to keep themselves at the top. So things that can come from there to help don’t. Good news is that china is funding their development but I think that’s mainly going to go back to china.

Corporations do dirty stuff like this all the time, which is why the electric car took so long to develop.

World hunger could have been solved several times over if it weren’t for dirty interests and their money.

But also like you said, people suck. And people get elected to make decisions. So they make decisions that suck.

A man I knew chose to be homeless and sleep on a boat in a little room for homeless people got a tiny room each.

He said they had expensive food for dinner because the licsl restaurants would give their leftovers to the homeless.

He said they had better meals than most people .
