Eyesight and diabetes

I suspected I had an early cataract in right eye, a fact that was confirmed in last eye exam. The doc called them “baby cataracts” and said I might not need surgery for 10 years.

The bizarre thing to me is that, even though my blood sugars have not been all that great over the last few days, my vision in my right eye has improved today.

I suspect that the vision variations are a combo of cataracts and high blood sugar related blurriness.

I just find it weird that the degree of impairment seems unpredictable to some degree. I did not expect improvement when my blood sugar has not been great. I dunno.

Just thought I would share some thoughts on it.

I have “baby” cataracts too. My vision is always slightly blurry even with glasses. I no longer see clearly anymore

I thank goodness for my left eye, lol. Do you have them in both or just one?

Both. Slightly in left eye and more pronounced in my right eye.

I’m pretty sure I only have it in right eye. I wondered why she used plural of word when she said it though. WOuldn’t it be cataract if only in one eye? I dont think you can have multiple in one eye?

According to my dr, everyone has cataracts but they’re very small. Then if they advance and you can’t see they remove them. But they’ve always been there to an extent

I see. Thanks for the info. Maybe that’s what she meant by the plural. My right eye seems fairly impaired though. I can’t see waiting 10 years to do something about it to be honest.

Yeah my vision becomes blurry after I eat sweets or sugary foods.

I’m not sure this is correct after a few internet searches. Maybe your doctor meant most older adults get them?

" What are cataracts? A cataract is a cloudy area in the lens of your eye. Cataracts are very common as you get older. In fact, more than half of all Americans age 80 or older either have cataracts or have had surgery to get rid of cataracts."

Cataracts | National Eye Institute.

" Due to old age, you will develop some amount of cataracts during your lifetime. It may not develop to the point of needing surgery but you will eventually have some form of it. Cataracts are the most common age-related eye condition and the leading cause of preventable blindness. Currently, more than 24.4 million Americans over 40 suffer from cataracts."

lol. They probably meant that pretty much all, it not all, older folks have them. I dont think younger people necessarily have them.

Actually he specifically said we’re born with them. So I won’t be returning to him. I don’t like when drs are completely wrong. I don’t mind when they need to look things up, but if they give me completely false info I don’t go back.

YEah, I don’t think thats right at all.

" Cataracts most commonly affect older adults (age-related cataracts), but some babies are born with cataracts . Children can also develop them at a young age."
