Yes nationalism, patriotism. It stems from how football as a precursor to most of the ills of this world.
I don’t like football (soccer) but I’d never state it is the root of the ills in this world. So you think if we stopped organizing matches/competitions/cups, the world would magically turn into a paradise? 
Eventually. To start a radical transformation of the individual it must start somewhere. To continue as it is is a disaster.
