A 42-year-old man with a history of schizoaffective disorder and caffeine overdose was admitted to the emergency room after ingesting 24 g of caffeine. Patient was attempting suicide and was found 4 days after ingestion. Four days prior to admission he reported uncontrollable vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of consciousness. He denied polysubstance abuse and was noncompliant with his prescribed medications (lithium and olanzapine). Laboratory tested were consistent with acute renal failure and rhabdomyolysis (creatinine 10.2 mg/dl). Patient received daily hemodialysis for 9 days and was transferred to the inpatient psychiatric unit [29A].
