Cause u know we hear voices and all? And that different sounds have great effect on my psyche. I always feel the sounds i hear need to be in some sort of state of tranquility or i go bonkers
Sound, at certain frequencies can cause hallucinations in normal people, so yes sound can have an effect on us, but it is only greater than in normal people because of our already deteriorated mental state. I participated in a study while in BCT before my meltdown, they used sound to make us un able to move. some of the guys were so affected by the sounds they sent our way they puked, or fainted. It was four days after this that I had my meltdown…
I don’t think I’m affected any differently by sounds. But I’ve never heard voices.
there’s some studies done on what happens to the brain after you hear voices. i guess there is some “microstructural changes” that occur. I guess the voices really impact the brain’s acoustic pathways
I can’t get to the full article because it costs money and I’m not a university student anymore, but here’s the abstract link:
ncbi link on auditory hallucinations and brain abnormalities
here’s the conclusion:
“CONCLUSIONS:
These findings indicate complex microstructural changes in the interhemispheric auditory pathway of schizophrenia patients with a history of AVHs. Alterations appear to be absent in patients who have never hallucinated.”
fyi if you’re in university you can access all these articles for free and even download and save them. i used to do that but i graduated. the whole library was mine, though, and all the academic articles were free for me as a student!
I seem to have read somewhere that those with sz are more sensitive to sounds and find it harder to filter out extraneous noises.
I am not sz but one of my worst auditory experiences was going to a busy restaurant for my befriender’s birthday. The jumbled sound of all the diners speaking to each other was most disconcerting and made it hard to focus on what my befriender was saying.
