Do we have to take mania meds forever?

Was manic with mixed states for a few weeks and am just now coming down after sticking to 175-200 Seroquel for the past 2 weeks.

I suffer from both bipolar type I and schizophrenia symptoms, though I have never been prescribed a mood stabilizer with the sole purpose of treating mood symptoms.

I’m not on stable APs since April. Before was on them for a few yrs. Did not like APs because they meant intense panic attacks almost daily regardless of dose.

Muscle twitching was the last straw. Pdoc agreed we could wean off in early 2018.

Psychotic symptoms like delusions have ceased on Seroquel and cognition and insight have gotten better today, but I am deathly afraid of having panic attacks, eps and weight gain again. I also felt APs exacerbated neg sx, and those made me not functional.

What is the best way to maintain sanity without using any antipsychotics?

Is it possible lamictal alone might be a good med for avoiding mania…then I will just remain with very mild delusion and psychosis as long as I manage the mania (which precipitates psychosis and is connected with it).

I’m thinking lamictal first thing in the morning (regular wake up time at 9am, and melatonin atarax and l-theanine/GABA around 7pm. We might take very small doses of seroquel around that time.

I think you are on the right track. And, working with your pdoc is the right decision.

I’m taking lamictal 25 mg today, start at beginning of year.

Anyone know if it’s safe to take w/l-theanine?
