Do old people lose muscle?

I’ve noticed that the muscles in my dads legs are shrinking.

Yes they do.
My elderly dad has shrunk considerably.
He’s gotten shorter.

Oh goodness!!! My family’s already short. I’m 5’2”.

Muscle and strength can be increased and size less diminished through weight training, but it does lessen anyway, hence a fall breaking hips is common in the elderly.

I hear ya! My dad does physical labor all day everyday and he’s still shrinking.

Yeah, unfortunately age catches up with us all. :frowning:

Fractures are more common in elderly people because the bone density decreases. But muscle mass decreases too. Oh and visual sharpness, hearing acuity etc. they all decline as we grow old.

Mother Nature wins every time. There’s no avoiding aging forever.

My dad has always been so strong.

My dad was always so strong also.
He was a weight lifter in his youth.

Age catches up to all of us.

Muscle mass decreSes with age. It also becomes more difficult to extract oxygen out of the air we breath, making exercise more difficult

Once I saw a very skinny around 60 years-old lady beating me on jogging. She was skinny, but much more strength than me.

Aerobic strength: her heart and lungs are more efficient.
