The disease and the meds can both cause avolition and anhedonia.
For me it’s both.
I was fine til I went on antipsyhotic. In terms of avolition.
Its both for me. I went off meds for a year, still had avolition. The least avolition I had after sz is when I was on Abilify.
When off meds its my positive symptoms that caused avolition bcz I was fearing everyone including my family and the government. I went living alone in Germany. I isolated myself in my room all day and stayed in bed. It was actually worse than when on any antipsychotic bcz now at least I speak with my parents.
Why did you go to Germany? For how long, what made you come back to your home?
I thought I am Jesus and Hitler at the same time, revenge of Jesus and that I will bring heaven to earth. I had catatonia and bought knives there to stab myself but I cried when I remembered my mother, she kept calling me and I wasn’t answering. My parents went from Canada to Italy for vacation and they were going to pick me up after but I ended up joining them in Italy after they sent me a plane ticket to Italy.

Yes I was destroying walls at home, felt like an emotional explosion, I was crying and destroying doors, walls, etc 4 cops came to pick me up, they followed the ambulance and joined me again in mental hospital until I was seen by a psychiatrist and given meds. They didn’t leave me alone I was in boxers only when they came and they even watched me put my clothes on upstairs.
I did worse when unmedicated, I threw knives at my brother and he did bleed from his forearm.
I am doing much better on meds, no positive symptoms, only severe negative symptoms which are a smaller problem.
Why did you throw knives at him.
I don’t remember, my memory is bad while psychotic but I was very irritable and aggressive. I easily get mad over anything.
When I took certain AP’S like haloperidol or olanzapine then I felt avolition
Others like risperidone and amisulpride helped.
I take amisulpride with a little olanzapine and it helps. But still get avolition to some degree
Off meds I get it worse so it’s both meds and sza for me.
I’m on Haldol. I don’t know if I feel like doing a med change. I’ve only ever been on 4 meds. Those four were risperdal, haldol, invega and ability.
The Conventionals made my avolation worse than the atypicals. But I am hit pretty hard and my avolation started 8 years before I was put on meds. at the age of 24.
Dopamine blockers reduce motivation and thats how it supposed to work. Being manic, hypomanic, psychotic etc is a kind of increased energy, mood etc created by high dopamine rush. Sadly most of the people who experience this use their energy in the negative way and end up in hospital. Out of these hypomania is a great feeling as in this people have mania and at the same time better control.
I asked my psychiatrist if aps make negatives worse because of the small amount of dopamine in the brain, he said no. I’m not sure
