Do antidepressants stop working?

I started on citalopram in Jan last year and it worked wonders for my depression last year. When I was hospitalized in October it was for psychosis symptoms not depression.

At the moment my psychosis is not so bad, but the depression has come back from last month. I think it started two weeks ago and still no relief.

Why? is my AD not working anymore? @crimby said something on other post about SSRI’s stop working. Citalopram is an SSRI.

They can stop working, it’s called “tachyphylaxis”.

Yes, they can, and it’s not just antidepressants. Lots of drugs can “poop out” over time. Including antipsychotics. Whether yours has or not, I have no idea.

I was on seroxat for twenty years and it gradually stopped working over time
But I’m in the process of changing onto another antidepressant called duloxetine

Do they START working???

I really didn’t notice much difference in my depression while taking them.

My depression lifted on its own years ago so I quit them.

I’ve tried Effexor and Paxil. I’m on Trazodone now but not for depression, I use that for akathisia.

The withdrawals were harsh when quitting.

Yeah, I haven’t had much luck with antidepressants since getting sz either. They seem to make zero difference for me.

Antidepressant has been helpful for me

They don’t work on me.

I take Pristiq because it helps my anxiety, but it doesn’t touch the depression.

They have been known to do that, but I don’t know all the particulars about the situation. You could check it out. Talk to your pdoc, and look it up on the internet.

Dolmatil, Risperdole, zyprexa stopped working for me after a year. Clopixol has worked for me now for a quarter century.

Those are antipsychotics, not antidepressants. I wish every typical AP had no effect on me.

I mad a thread about tachyphylaxis a while ago, i have experienced it a lot ot times, one of the strategies is to stop taking the antidepressans completely a month or two and then start up again, the drug will work again, until next time it stops to work.

My MAO-i stopped to work four months ago. I stopped taking it for one and a half month and started it up again a month ago, and now it works again.

Invega has had worked for me for 5 years. I quited it for six months as i wanted to try without medication but my situation got really worse while i was off from the drugs for six months. Now i started the strongest Invega again and it works great for me, i hope i can use this same medication long as possible as its tolerable to deal with side effects of this medication. I benefit from many drugs, as i started SSRI, Zoloft and it has started to work greatly i hope from full of my heart the positive effects lasts long as possible as it has been really helpful to me.
