Disability

After watching the Paralympics I’ve come to terms with schizophrenia being a disability. As it’s a mental impairment. Some of the paralympians have visual, hearing or physical impairments.

Am I right in saying this?

The social security administration in the US considers schizophrenia a disability. However, you have to prove that it’s a disability for you in your life. Schizophrenia can be a disability.

My schizophrenia is recognized as a disability, but it’s not approved indefinitely. Some people with sz are still expected to recover here or at least having a chance at it.

Condition, disability, disorder, illness . It’s not always easy knowing which to use. Does ‘impairment’ cover all bases?

Do you think it’s a good thing or a bad thing?

To me it’s in line with reality. Some people are able to work at some point with sz. And it doesn’t make sense to pay disability to people who can work.

That being said with a sz diagnosis you’re treated gently. They encourage you to set up a trajectory to work but don’t easily threaten you here with losing your benefits. It’s more of an encouragement to get you out of the sofa to do something.

For example, my first year of studying chiropractic in Spain was approved so that I can keep my benefits in the beginning and get every chance for success (and what they are obviously hoping for to get me off benefits).

Here in Sweden they only grant you disability if you are thoroughly fu-cked.

If I would work/study one single day I would lose my disability.

It kind of sucks knowing I can’t amount to anything.

I would love to start studying again. But I can’t.

Be glad that you have this opportunity and that you are able to do it abroad even.

I have thought about distance courses though, I just can’t find anything interesting. I don’t know the rules about that??

When your brain is not able to solve concrete problems anymore, it’s disability.

Here it’s even possible to work with disability. The criterion to get disability is that you are considered 66% disabled.

I guess our system is more flexible.

It’s also unrealistic for people to go from disability to full-time work at once. It can take years of taking baby steps.

Is there anyone who you can talk to to find out more about your possibilities? I was able to find all information on the website of social security. They publish all the rules on their website.

I sent them an email asking my possibilities to study part-time on distance courses.

There is a so called “technical base year” which involves math, physics and chemistry courses. If I can enlist and get those grades then those grades are valid so I can apply for university.

Let’s see what they say!
