Do you notice that people with schizophrenia, depression or anxiety talk more about their symptoms, daily life, and even failures? I notice that normal people and even those who cope better with their symptoms, like to talk more about pleasure, fun and excitement-- travel, food, sports, etc; and gossip more- celebrities, political figures, etc.
Is it because the people with mental illness see things in themselves, their inner worlds, whereas the normal people see things in the materialistic world?
One of the symptom of schizophrenia is derealization. The world seems not real to them. Hopefully more and more people will be able to reconnect their thinking and feeling, and return to the society.
In the process, I still think venting is vital although it is not welcomed by many. And be medication compliant.
I never talk about my illness in real life. So dunno.
It’s a funny observation. I find that normal people will talk about their job or whatever it is they do all day. I notice I fight my symptoms like it’s my job, so that is what is on my mind. I try not to overwhelm those around me about it, so this forum and recovery groups are a welcome outlet. But I do pretty much think about how to overcome this illness 24/7, at least at this point in my life.
Maybe you will meet someone who can be trusted in the future.
So that means your job is to fight your symptoms. Very creative.
I really never have noticed, or realized that, but what you say is true. A possible reason for this is because those who find it hard to cope with their symptoms talk about them because that’s what is on their mind all day. There really isn’t room for anything else since coping with eh symptoms and controlling them can take up most or all of their concentration. It could also be a more subconscious thing. They talk about it in hope of getting help since other people are hearing it. This could also be a conscious thing. That’s just a theory of mine. Not sure if it’s true or not.
I have symptoms everyday…but distract with anything that holds my attention…so what you say may be true…I’ve found a cooping tech that works for me and don’t talk about sz much…I read about everything that’s posted…unless I can tell it will trigger me…
i don’t feel real, i just want to feel real. My skin is plastic my face will peel what can i do to make me feel real? I haven’t a clue where i bought this glue, i sniffed it for breakfast so how do you do? now i have holes in my brain, oh sweet summers rain, for peat sake just make the feeling remain.
In my early years with the disorder I could find little escapes here and there, but now I just stare at walls of pain throughout the day.
I believe we talk about it a lot because deep down we know that we aren’t normal and we need to compensate for our worries.
I actually find that to be a neat observation. I’m not very vocal about my symptoms in real life, but I’m more likely to do the opposite when I’m online. I think that this is the case with me and many other mentally ill individuals on the internet because we may not have a chance to speak about our symptoms and whatever else we’re going through to our friends or peers that may have a lesser understanding of psychology.
Is derealization a symptom of schizophrenia?
It might be because people without schizophrenia has some good things for them in the material world, where as those that are ill have nothing and thus would rather not focus on the negative world.
