I believe I had trouble finding the level of “self” as it’s defined generally and can fall in and out of it.

Hmm?.

When deindividuation occurs, people may do things they would never do when alone or being seen as an individual. They lose their ability to evaluate their behavior. They lose their inhibitions. They feel less socially responsible. They lose their sense of right and wrong and take on the sense of reality presented to them by the actions of the mob. This was illustrated in the Stanford Prison experiment where people lost their identity due to social roles. The problem with individuation is when people become passive to philosophies like Adolf Hitler. I think deindividuation is also pathological to schizophrenia. Deindividuation is the tendency of humans to group other people and thereby dilute or eliminate their individuality. This happens all of the time. When people make statements such as – all Schizophrenics do this, or all Schizophrenics are like this. I think people become “deindividuated” the minute they are labeled schizophrenic.
