I live in Denmark and have the option to apply for a “flex job”. Basically, this means that I can work 50% and get paid the rest by the city. The problem is now that I work too many hours to fall into this category. I am at about 75% of full time. So I discussed with my case handler today the option of having my position cut down in hours so it was only 50% and then apply for the flex job. I am dealing with mixed feelings about this because I just applied to get more work hours and like to feel like I am contributing. I really fought to be able to get this job at 75%. I hate to have to surrender to this diagnosis and work less than what I feel like I can. I don’t even know how much the sz is affecting me. I work decently but have trouble focusing sometimes, especially in stressful situations. Sometimes I screw up in ways I never did before my last trip to the hospital in 2018. In addition, the medicine (Latuda) gives me brain fog and a bunch of other annoying symptoms. Does anyone have any good advice on how to deal with feeling guilty about working less or any experience related to this? Any help appreciated.
That’s a tough call. The question is, do you think you could handle full-time? Also, do you get full benefits? I’m guessing that on assistance, you’re drugs Etc would be covered.
As far as feeling less guilty about it, myself for example I used to work 60 hours a week if not more. Now I don’t work at all. Some of that is due to schizophrenia, but there are several other mitigating factors as well.
It sucks, but you have to do what’s necessary for you. If you look at it as cut-and-dried, maybe it makes the decision easier
Thanks for the reply. I hate having to tell my employees that I am going to be taking this route since it’s like admitting to them that I can’t handle the job. I’m pretty sure I could handle the 75% job but there’s no way to make up the last 25% unless I go all the way down to 50%. It’s a weird system, I know, but they only help the really helpless and not the “kind of struggling”.
I’m kind of in a similar boat. I was in a car accident, and under my work insurance contract if I work 20 hours a week, I lose all of my benefits. It’s absolutely ridiculous, and I have no idea why it is designed that way. You would think if I worked, they could deduct it from my benefits and save money.
I also have no drug coverage, so basically I would have to give up my work benefits and go on welfare to receive drug coverage. It’s a weird system to navigate, for sure
Sorry to hear you’re dealing with this.
Unfortunately if they’re going to make the rules like that, your health has to become the priority
Yeah the system punishes you for doing more.
Thanks for the reply. I will try to think of it as prioritizing my health.
Work more if you’re stable. Try Amyloban 3399. Please ask @shutterbug about it, this helps him do full time work.
i’d go for the 50% and get half help… you’ll get used to it probably… feel a bit guilty at first but remember that you can’t help it that you need help when having MI.
I take my benefits and i don’t look for job.
Thank god
Aren’t you in Canada? Thers free public insurance and they pay most of the med price, I pay like 14-20$cad/month for my Risperdal.
Is that through the Trillium drug plan? I am covered by private insurance, through work. There is no drug coverage, nor is there coverage for things like Physiotherapy. I have called Ontario Works, and they said they couldn’t help me either
Oh I am in Quebec. I use the free public/government insurance called RAMQ. But isn’t healthcare free for all Canada? I know its free for meds and Drs but maybe not for physiotherapy.
I’ve never heard of RAMQ. The only thing I have access to is Trillium drug plan, and it is over $1,200 a year for me.
Maybe there is the equivalent of RAMQ here? Not sure. I’ve asked my doctor, and she has no info for me about any other government drug plans
Any agency I have asked, simply refers me to Trillium. Frustrating
Are you on government assistance of some kind? Maybe that’s the difference
When i was on odsp my invega was 100% covered. When i started working they continued to pay for my meds for like a year then they cut me off.
No I am not. I am still on employment sickness benefits but even when I was working I had the RAMQ public insurance, I have always had it. On RAMQ website it says anyone who is a resident in Quebec is elligible. Everyone who has taken up residence permanently in Québec must have prescription drug coverage at all times. But you either choose public or private insurance, I dont think you can have both.
Oh you’re right in Ontario its different, you need to be on disability:
