Current Events

The couple times I went to a clubhouse a staff gathered people around and started talking about current events. It seems interesting, but people may use this to bring up politics. Hopefully that doesn’t happen.

Anyways a couple weeks ago Pakistan shot down an Indian jet and is keeping the pilot hostage. Maybe there is a war brewing

yeah and American’s are in danger of losing their avocados. today on talk radio they were talking about it.

I love avocados but have stopped buying them. not for any political reasons, they are just too expensive and they don’t grow in a temperate climate like where I live.

Oh Yea I think I heard avocados will be ridiculously expensive if the border is shut down with Mexico.

The United States has recently sold some F-16V fighter jets to Taiwan (Republic of China) which has irked Beijing (People’s Republic of China). If Taiwan ever declares independence then the People’s Liberation army will be ordered to invade. An invasion of Taiwan by China will force the US to send 2 aircraft carrier groups to defend Taiwan if the military conflict lasts longer than a week.

That’s interesting. I’ve heard it before. I also heard China had a ship that was in contested waters with Taiwan.

Yes, 2 US naval frigates or destroyers sailed through the Taiwan Strait a few weeks ago in the name of “freedom of navigation” which is the same claim used to sail around the South China Seas.

Oh yeah that’s right. How long has Taiwan been an independent nation? Did they ever win their independence?

That is a misconception depending on which Taiwanese political party you are aligned with either the DPP or KMT. Taiwan is not an independent nation as they are not recognized by the United Nations and the ROC constitution states Taiwan is a part of China.

Oh I had no idea. Thanks

If there is a military crisis between China and the USA, remember this conversation because Taiwan will be the military flashpoint.

China has 1 aircraft carrier. So it would seem they don’t put much stock into having a Navy? right?

Does that mean Taiwan will be on the US’s side?

Doesn’t the US owe China 30 trillion dollars?

1 aircraft carrier that was bought from Russia, a 2nd that was constructed in China and a 3rd that is currently being built.

Yes.

China is the principle holder of US debt or treasury bonds.

That’s what I thought too. Imagine if China called in the debt America would be bankrupt. It would start a war

You could say that the debt that US owes to China is a leverage but I don’t think those treasury bonds would be used in that way unless of extreme circumstances.

By extreme circumstances that would mean the US attacking or dropping bombs on China, right?

It could be the other way around too where Chinese ICBMs are launched at US cities. But these are hypothetical scenarios.
