Constipation from AP’s

What do others use or do to solve the constipation caused by antipsychotics? I’ve become reliant on Docusate Sodium with Sennosides - and am concerned of continuing to use them for the long term. I have already been using it for some time (1-1/2 to 2 years)! That’s already long term! LOL

For a long time I used isphagula (psyllium husk seeds). It takes two days to work, but it was better than laxatives.

Magnesium is also a good option.

Good luck.

I used Psyllium, Milk of Mag, Lactulose or Senna for 35 years. Ie., ever since I’ve been on AP’s. Just last week, I had a talk with my GI doctor and he convinced me to use something called, Miralax, one cap full every night mixed with a half of a cup of water. In short, it works.

Magnesium oxide capsules, psyllium seed husks, colace. All work great when I need it. Probiotics help a little too.

I get constipation from clozapine

It’s the most persistent side effect

Take docusate in the morning and senna as PRN

Also have some liquid treatment that I never use

Sometimes it can be hard to clear but goes in fits and starts

I took a lot of meds in the first year as I thought diarrhoea was less bad than the other way

I started probiotics and magnesium citrate, along with ensuring I am getting enough water - and some exercise - seems to be helping. I will keep the Docusate Sodium with Sennosides on hand, as well as Smooth Move tea (also Senna), just in case. Thank you to those who shared here .

I hear you. I get it from clozapine. The docusate senna I have been taking because my psych recommended. It has been giving me a stomach ache so I’ve been taking a break from it though. It’s rough!! I hope you find a good solution for yourself. Best wishes.

I use MiraLax cause its safe to use long term. A gastroenterologist started me on it when it used to be a prescription and told me I could take it everyday. It takes a couple days to work for me so I take it a few days in a row. But it is safe and u cant get dependent on it.

Ive been having it for awhile. Been taking an over the counter powder with liquid that seems to help. Doc also says blood results says Im dehydrated, so Im guessing more water would help.

It was also my psychiatrist that recommended the docusate senna. I just don’t like that I became dependent on it.

I will keep the miralax on my list of possibilities to help.
