“Come back when you’re no longer disabled”

This is what I was told when I applied to my local grocery store when I said I’d only like to work 15 hours per week instead of the manager’s minimum of 24. They’re now having a hiring event. I sent a message to corporate about my experience. I said I’m not surprised they’re having trouble finding employees since they’re so willing to turn people away. Would you have complained like I did?

Yes yes yes. Keep complaining.

Can you contact goverment programs to help you find jobs that suit you?

I don’t know. I guess I could check that out.

Uh, excuse me. Isn’t that illegal?

Do you live in the USA?? I think they aren’t allowed to do that here… It’s part of some kind of non-discriminatory law it’s like an employer can’t turn away someone because the color of their skin! You have rights!.. in the US not sure about anywhere else

Yes. I’m in the US. It’s also a major grocery chain. I sent the complaint to corporate. I don’t expect anything to come of it but I’m not surprised they’re desperate for help

@LilyoftheValley I’d contact my local government officials of some kind they shouldn’t be able to turn you away just because of your disability! I wish you luck!

In our grocery stores, we have schizophrenics bagging who only work two afternoons a week, at a total of four to six hours. Look, here in the USA, if you are on SSI, there is a very small amount of money one can make before they take a huge chunk out of your pay.

In 1980, I was making $16 a week at grocery store because we were only allowed to make $65 a month gross. Social Security called and woke me at home at 9AM on Saturday to tell me I was making too much. I said “Wait a minute, I’m allowed to make $65 a month. Four times $16 is $64.” They said, “No, you wait a minute. Some months have five weeks in them.”

It was going to mean a ton of paperwork. They were going to take half my gross salary out of my SSI check. I was still going to have to pay a bunch of FICA and other taxes I would not get back. I would have to report my income to foodstamps, and my allotment would go down. Also, I would have had to report my earnings to Rent Assistance, and the amount I paid in rent would go up. Additionally, I would have to report my income to Fuel Assistance, and the amount they would pay me would go down. Also, the FoodBank would like to see my pay stubs.

I don’t work there anymore.

Interesting. I didn’t know that. I’m not going to fight it legally since I waited so long to complain. But I’ll keep that in mind for the future

Obviously I would have. Some countries have legal provisions against discrimination.

I dont think they were turning her away because of disability discrimination but they were turning her away because she didnt meet the minimum required hours for the position
