Cognitive Impairment Associated with Schizophrenia Pipeline Drugs Analysis

Quite a few drugs, but not meeting endpoint is a common theme…

Hopefully one or two of them make it through.

Oh, there’s a drug for MELAS in development, this is inspiring. I should read up on its possible mechanism of action. It acts on soluble guanylate cyclase - a nice article to read up.

It’s quite a tough condition, MELAS, along with many other mitochondrial diseases (which sometimes present as depression/headaches, sometimes have been misdiagnosed as anorexia nervosa, based on papers I’ve read).

There’s also a curious case report of a patient with MELAS who had psychotic depression with auditory hallucinations. Would make for a captivating short story, I would say.

All the more interesting in light of the recent news report on the discovery of a subtype of PV-interneurons which may become dysfunctional in schizophrenia, and which, according to the discovery paper, might require increased amounts of energy to run.
