Coach said, "call me if you ever change your mind"

some football coach for earlham college, in richmond, indiana. he wanted me to play football in college, i remember i told him i wasn’t interested and he said “if you ever change your mind, give me a call”. well i have no regrets about not playing and couldnt have afforded tuition at that school anyways. this was 18 years ago. i was too small to play high school football let alone college football. i was always all banged up after a game, and it ruined my jump shot in my favorite sport basketball for about the first 1/3rd or half of the basketball season until i got my stroke back.

they wanted me and my buddy dave to go and play there, we both had the grades, and were athletic. we ended up being roommates at IU dave wasnt interested in playing college football either haha.

One of my biggest regrets is not playing high school football. I probably would have sucked anyway. I’m not athletic at all. I just feel like team sports are a way to have fun, learn a lot and grow.

well i became a good sport, because our football teams lost a lot and it allowed me to see what is important and what is not. we had the worst teams in school history, usually they are pretty good. we went .500 my senior year though, and that was a major improvement over my previous sophomore and junior year.

i played cornerback and slot receiver. and returned kicks and punts and never fair caught on punts haha. i took some big hits, i played every snap my senior year, because the underclassmen were worse than us and i had to play special teams as well. no wonder i could never put on any weight, all that running.

it’s weird to me that they are good now, but they don’t have anybody who can field a punt on the fly. they just let it hit the ground and roll now for fear of muffing it, it’s not that hard to catch a punt. it will cost them later in the year.

You may have been small, but you were good enough to be recruited so that’s got to feel good. It’s ok that it wasn’t right for you. You should be proud that you were mature enough to recognize that at such a young age.

yeah it helped that i didn’t even like football. it was just a big pent up anger outlet, i was never angry when i was playing football, would get all my emotions out on the field i guess and would be laid back the rest of the time. if it werent for my brother influencing me to play when i was a little kid, i would have never played haha. it was an easy decision not to play for me.

my favorite thing about playing football was lifting weights and conditioning that kept me in good shape, not the actual games themselves.

i remember my buddy jared used to make fun of me calling me an “ankle biter” haha. because on defense and special teams i had to tackle the opponent low, aiming for the legs to get them to the ground haha.
