Changes in verbal learning and memory in Schizophrenia in midlife - Its the Same as for "Normals"

Good News - no major differences in memory and verbal learning for people who have schizophrenia vs. everyone else.

Conclusion:

We conclude that during midlife verbal learning and memory in schizophrenia mostly declines in a normative fashion with aging at the same rate as the general population.

What’s “midlife”?
Does this mean that I have the same ability to learn stuff as if I weren’t diagnosed as SZA?

Midlife is typically people 35 to 50 years old - since most people live to 70 to 100 years old.

Yes - this study indicates that your learning and memory changes (on average - which doesn’t mean you specifically) isn’t significantly different than people who don’t have schizophrenia

But intelligence and cognitive functioning might be influenced with the onset of the illness, am I wrong?

Yes - I think that is true.

What they are saying is that there after the initial psychosis, there is no additional hit on memory and verbal learning as a person ages (with schizophrenia).

At least if that really comes out to be true - because one study doesn’t make it absolute - it’s a good thing.

Anyone with a mental disease still has to go through the same life processes as anyone else. I see it in my son…

@bridgecomet
But the deterioration could be higher in patients with SZ type illnesses and the only thing this study is pointing out is that in midlife there seems to be no difference of degree in that. Were you offended in any away? (because of the bold styling)
