That’s a pretty decent salary.
It depends which state/city you live in how far that money will go though. Home prices vary a lot from state/city to state/city. There is a big difference in home prices from Los Angeles California to Davenport , Ia for example. It also depends on the neighborhood in each city. Location location location as they say.

We can only afford a house up to the value of £550000or so and we’d need to move away. I don’t know how I’ll cope.

You also want to remember that salary and take home pay are different things. In your country, taxes are higher because you have health care and public transit.

The mortgage is four times the salary apparently. Not take home. The total salary.
Move to Canada. Most places you’d very easily get a nice house for $400k or less.

Cheaper to live up north in the Uk.
On the edge of London near the m25 I think houses get cheaper. Not too sure. London is the best. Good transport, and plenty of amenities.

are houses alot more expensive in different parts of the country?, here u can get a nice 3 bedroom multiple floor house with lots of space inside and out for less than $200k sometimes even less than $100k
