Business/Entrepreneurship

I rather have a successful business than have a pension because pensions dry up or you die a few years after retiring. Seen it 3-4 times now in my family. Cancer, illness, sickness, tiredness, etc. Pensions sound nice and stuff but I rather hustle and make money and be creative instead of working at the same job for 30+ years and hoping I live long enough to see that money. It works for some people. The actuaries count on some of that money never being collected.

Private sector pays more but people want cushy jobs. I figure I need 500k-1mm to retire and escape poverty/homelessness and have a higher standard of living when I retire.

There’s so many ways to make money: investing is a big one that I like.

I am UK based

File my own taxes

Used to be a data analyst so I am handy with finances and spreadsheets!

I see, that saves money and keeps you in control of things and probably gives you a lot better oversight of the business itself.

Yes the oversight is important.

It would be easy to spend all your profit on equipment etc,

If you keep an eye on these things, you see the benefits in what you make.

I am very detailed about margins and day rate charges on a job by job basis, and how that smooths over the year
