A class act. No talk about “bit*hes” (well, maybe once) or “hoes”. No graphic violence or hate. Outside of the studio he was an outlaw, a rebel, but the epitimey of cool. But his songs were just, simple catchy tunes that crossed the line between pop, country music, and rockabilly. Rarely offensive.

Merle Haggard died a few days ago. He said his monster hit “Okie from Muskogee” was really a satire. After all those years he finally clued us in. I grew up in Muskogee, and believe me, it was nothing like the song.
