Are you diabetic and on anti-psychotic meds?

ever since i was dx with schizophrenia and i was put on thorazine, my diabetes blood sugars went through the roof (very very dangerous). i was put on many different meds to see if there was any hope of getting my diabetes under control. for years i suffered with elevated blood sugars and having to take very large doses of insulin to try and stay in a healthy range. finally, i found seraquil, which didn’t elevate my BSs, but didn’t do much in the way of helping my paranoia. so then i switched to haldol, which was wonderful at first because it completely cured my paranoia but i couldn’t put a complete sentence together; i just kept forgetting things and my family was afraid i would leave the house and not know where i was. then i finally found clozeril, and BINGO, i found the perfect drug. on a very high dosage (500mg) i was able to have moderate relief from my paranoia as well as having my Blood Sugars stabilized. i was able to reduce my insulin dosage and get my diabetes under control. also, on the clozeril i did not gain a pound.

does anyone have a similar story? thanks, daisy mae

I became a diabetic after being on Geodon for ten years. I tried many other drugs but when we finally went to Haldol I had symptom relief and so far my A1C has actually gone down. Hopefully this won’t scramble my language center.

I’m diabetic, but I’m only starting out with 1 mg of Risperdal. I don’t know if it raises blood sugars or not, but I haven’t seen anything yet. Hopefully as my dosage goes up my blood sugar doesn’t.

I’m a diabetic. I take Abilify and Trilafon. My blood sugar is always high but that’s because I don’t follow proper diabetic practices.

My blood sugar was getting up there due to the Seroquel… I got put on Metformin.

I have to watch the sugar in takes… it seems like there is sugar in everything…

The Metformin seems to be helping me keep things in check.
