Anyone tried EMDR?

I am going to try it in the next few weeks. Anyone tried it?

I have psychotic depression with chronic depersonalization …

Yes. It seemed to help some. Did it about eight years ago. See http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21963888.

“This pilot study shows that a short EMDR therapy is effective and safe in the treatment of PTSD in subjects with a psychotic disorder. Treatment of PTSD has a positive effect on auditory verbal hallucinations, delusions, anxiety symptoms, depression symptoms, and self-esteem.”

Gracias, I will send these links to my therapist.

Generally speaking, EMDR =must= be done by an EMDRIA-trained and certified specialist to be most effective. There are non-certified EMDR therapists who are “good” at it, but who may or may not utilize all of the eight steps involved as effectively as those who are formally schooled in the stuff. Likewise, a pt with a psychotic spectrum disorder would probably want to work with an EMDR therapist who is savvy about sz, sza, szt, bipola, etc., and not just PTSD.

See http://www.emdria.org/search/custom.asp?id=2337. Contact those in your area and interview them to see how much they know about the psychotic spectrum disorders, I guess.

Hi Bluey, I had EMDR and it was effective on lesser traumas.

I think it’s standard practice to identify the traumas you choose to work with. I had to write them down in order of severity and then work backwards from least to most severe. It seemed like one identified trauma per session.

I did not make it all the way through the list as I had a side effect part way through.

But the first ones on the list I did make it through did resolve, from my point of view…

I think notmoses is right to find an EMDR therapist who understands where you’re coming from. And your goals.
