Anyone big into hiking? and anyone who is middle age?

hi

there is a huge 650 mile coast path which is right next to me.

for about 30 years i have had this walk on my bucket list

it will now only be possible to start properly in Spring - late April / early May

it has “easy”, “moderate”, "strenuous"and “severe” roughly average 8 -10 mile sections
x 82

I am 44, my everything is starting to ache
this is a real bucket list thing

but then i get home and realise that it has been 30 years of not doing it. not doing the challenging 9 mi walk for example (one section) which has not been on my mind often enough.

my husband i think, might be up for it.
we did little bits
there is 80 x more to do

can’t do it in order because it is not possible as a beginner to start with ‘severe’ days

would it be your general advice to start with an “easy - moderate” alternate? for example
? and build up to a “severe” every 4 weeks?

i think in a few years i could do “severe” if we got into it
my husband is quite pain shy
i don’t know if he will cope with difficult hills - if not my sister might do a few bits with me.
I just can’t see myself heading out with a compass and money for a b and b
that is the kind of thing i did 20 years ago
i can’t see me coping with 9 miles of anything - even easy at the moment

Yeah start small. I average over 10km’s a day and I just started with a fitness tracker and just did a little bit every day till I now do it pretty easy and even have started running a bit!

I’m 48 and wish I started this 15 years ago when I was totally unmotivated and sitting on the couch! Doh!

Start small but regular. Aim for 30 minutes of brisk walking three times a week is a good start! Good luck!

I currently avg 12000 steps
Sometimes do double that
I walk my mums dog for a couple of hours sometimes too and live somewhere pretty hilly

These coastal paths labelled as severe are up and down huge cliffs for 9 - 14 mile hikes
I might not even make it past one hour walking them currently

Im daunted but another challenge is convincing someone to go with me, sister or husband
Suppose my sister for any severe as shes dome mountain hikes before

i’m lucky if i can break 10000 steps in a day, did it yesterday though  yay

its better when i have my mums dog

@Thanna it’s a big thing but if you can break it down or do some first that is good! Sounds like your doing pretty good steps wise. As you know hiking is a lot hard if your going up hill but it’s always good to build up for things.

If you double what your doing you’d do twice as much in real life? Not sure how it would translate and that is the hard thing. Don’t bite off more than you can chew so you’ll know what you can and can’t achieve!

That is all my advice because some hikes can be pretty challenging!

This sounds pretty cool. I’d definitely agree with @rogueone, that you should start off small and work your way up. I have had a vague notion that someday i’d like to hike the Appalachian Trail. I don’t know that i’ll ever get around to doing it though.

Was into hiking, hope to be again soon. Turn 50 next week. Waiting on having a pacemaker with its defective lead replaced, that will help with energy somewhat.

Yeah there are thru hikers who hike the whole AT. I think it takes like six months. I could never do that because i have pdoc appointments and prescriptions to refill and all that. If i ever did get around to any hiking it would be in small segments. A little at a time is still better than nothing.

No but I would if I could. I can’t have pets where I live.
