Just curious, when does the snow start sticking to the ground in Finland/Suomi? I remember when I lived in Houghton, Michigan the ground was snow covered October-April, and I always heard the U.P. and Finland were quite similar in some ways, and that was why so many Suomi immigrants came there. Anyway … just trying to make conversation.
It all depends, in the end of October snow may arrive, I lived one year also in Houghton, Michigan, in Hancock all street names were in Finnish, the similar climate …
Yep, I remembered you saying you did a year at Michigan Tech. I did the full four years there. Hell, Hancock had Suomi College (since has been renamed Finlandia University). I know immigrants from the other Scandanavian countries settled there; I mean, there’s a town called Norway not far from Houghton/Hancock.
I was in Houghton in 1989-90, I remember playing on the BITNET (that was before the Internet) in the evenings when it snowed…
I was there 1998-2002. Loved it there. The winters were harsh, but they grew on me. Beautiful country, though.
I realized yesterday that I am getting too old (75) to be just riding a bicycle. I get fatigued and fall into symptoms. When I can, I walk instead. I am surprised that, in this small town, motor vehicles with their noise, their stink and smell, have taken over the streets. People act out of habit and get in their cars to go short distances. It’s sad, pitiful really! The sidewalks are abandoned in this beautiful little town.
