I’ll try and keep this politics free, but after the news today its not looking too good. I’m not too worried yet, but I definitely plan on researching and talking to my care team about what options there are if I do over the next month.
I’m worried about it because if I lose Medicaid and can’t get my meds withdrawals will be hell.
same here. luckily my AP is a cheap generic but not sure about my new AD.
Yes, I’m very nervous about it. I don’t have Medicaid, only Medicare. But even just Medicare is better than private insurance that I can’t afford
Breathe easy ~ it’s all media hype. You’re not going to lose coverage or benefits.
Yeah I hear you. I’m on Medicaid so I will be screwed if I lose it. I’ve only managed to work part time since I got sz.
We’ll see over the next couple months, but I don’t like the direction we’re heading.
i just looked it up. its a proposed work requirement for the non-disabled. im not worried. i have ssi and there is no work requirement for people on SSI. in some states there has been work requirements for a long time already
I am but I’m from England
I’m not worried. I haven’t held a job since I was approved for SSDI plus I have nearly 20 years of documentation.
Did a side hustle with my dad but that was cash jobs.
Yeah I’m on SSI too. I looked it up and the only states with work requirements were Arkansas and Georgia, but there were exemptions for people who are caregivers, raising children or on disability.
I’ve only worked one job since I was approved for SSDI almost 30 years ago and I held that job for less than a month, I think. Besides, I’m retirement age now at 65.
Moved to Lounge. Not exclusively SZ news.
if we do lose medicaid you can still go to your gp to get your a p’s ppl.
It sounds like a ■■■■■■■ nightmare. Here is what ChatGPT says:
If the proposed $800 billion Medicaid cuts move forward, they could significantly impact schizophrenic individuals in the U.S., as many rely on Medicaid for healthcare, medications, and support services. Here’s how:
1. Loss of Healthcare Coverage
- Many people with schizophrenia qualify for Medicaid due to disability status or low income.
- Cuts could lead to stricter eligibility rules, pushing some off the program, leaving them uninsured or forcing them onto lower-quality private plans.
2. Reduced Access to Medications
- Antipsychotic medications like clozapine, risperidone, and olanzapine are essential for managing schizophrenia.
- Medicaid cuts might lead to fewer covered medications or require higher out-of-pocket costs, making treatment unaffordable for many.
3. Strain on Mental Health Services
- Many mental health clinics, therapists, and psychiatrists depend on Medicaid funding to provide low-cost care.
- Cuts could reduce therapy, case management, and crisis intervention services, leading to higher hospitalization and homelessness rates among schizophrenic patients.
4. Increased Homelessness & Incarceration Risks
- Medicaid supports housing assistance, community-based care, and outpatient treatment—all of which help keep schizophrenic individuals stable.
- Without these services, more people could end up homeless or in jail, as prisons often become the default mental health system when care isn’t available.
5. Possible Work Requirements Could Exclude Many
- Some proposals include work requirements for Medicaid eligibility.
- Many people with schizophrenia struggle to maintain stable employment due to symptoms like paranoia, delusions, and cognitive impairment.
- If work requirements are enforced, many could lose coverage altogether.
Potential Outcomes
Higher psychiatric hospitalizations due to untreated schizophrenia.
More homelessness as housing and support programs lose funding.
Increased incarceration rates if people lose access to treatment.
Families burdened with higher caregiving and medical costs.
GPs aren’t free, some of us are only on medicaid and would need to pay out of pocket or go to a free clinic if you’re lucky enough to have one nearby.
Many antipsychotics are over $1000/month. People won’t be able to afford their meds.
It’s also expensive to pay cash to see a GP.
I think that their will be changes ( cuts) to Medicaid
There might even be cuts to Medicare as well
