Any one experience decrease in intellegence from meds

hi im schizo.im ok now i took risperisone .i had decent iq .right now i feel my cognitive functions have decreased…any one with similar cindition

Not from meds, from the illness itself.

I used to be on course for a 1st class degree in maths and now I cant even read a book. I dunno if thats from the meds or illness though

Yes, same for me. I’ve been able to regain a lot of my former function, but it takes ongoing, daily effort. I’ve been doing cognitive rehabilitation exercises similar to what stroke victims do for over 20 years. They’ve helped.

Rispedal has an effect on choline in the brain. Latuda and Haldol don’t have this effect so they are better for cognitive symptoms.

I also had a severe cognitive decline. It started before my diagnosis and got a lot worse after I took meds. But I took my meds religeously every morning and night and it appears that I am doing better and better each day.

My cognitive functioning on typical ap’s is way lower than my cognitive functioning on the atypicals. There is a huge difference in the quality of my creative writing when I am on the typicals from when I am on the atypicals. I’ve read some of the things I wrote when I was on Haldol, and they were horrible. I haven’t taken any IQ tests when I was on Haldol, but I’d be willing to bet my IQ was substantially lower when I was on that drug.

Oh yes. Have trouble with simple arithmetic - In the distant past my IQ was in the genius range. That doesn’t mean I was smart or wise, but good at answering those kind of questions.

The issue is, both medication and the illness can damage the brain. So you can’t tell which is which, but either way I’d prefer being on medication to being off of it as off of it my thoughts are so disorganized I can’t even talk straight.
