Any experience with emergency room billing?

last year when i had a job and insurance i was baker acted into an emergency room. i was so schizophrenic that i didnt even tell them my insurance, and i told them to take off my parents name from my emergency contact information out of paranoia.

i now have no insurance, but just got a collections call for 9000 dollar emergency room visit. i gave the collector my previous insurance and she took down the information.

whats likely to happen in this case? technically i had insurance at the time, but failed to use it because of my illness and fear of people tracking me

your insurance should cover it if you can show proof for the duration of the visit. i’ve been put in (we call it a 5150 for 72 hour or a 5250 when they extend the hold to two weeks here) on the same sort of situation and refused to give my name, etc, and once identified (which usually takes a day or two) they transfer me out of SF general and start billing my insurance. i think it should work the same way provided you can show proof, which it sounds like you did.

good luck with it.
