There are many Chinese languages. They’re not always mutually intelligible.

@TheBest, speaking Chinese is not enough.
Reading and writing are necessary for good command of the language.

That’s interesting. So it’s technically ok to say somebody speaks Chinese? I always thought the proper term was to say Mandarin. Didn’t realize China had so many languages.

@mjseu These three characters are Chinese, which is a term that is used in traditional weddings , which means “bow to the heaven and earth” as worshiping the God (heavenly father) and godess (earthly mother).

It is interesting how different our cultures are. I have an old jacket from DDR and it has a red flag on the shoulder, then I met one person whom I know and he commented that I have this red flag, I just commented back that in China red is a lucky colour, I suppose I am right ???
I think one benefit that the sz forum provides is that we have people from many different cultures and we can share our experiences.
