Antipsychotics with minimal side effects

Hi, I recently was on Caplyta for about half a year. It was a decent med, but eventually, I ended up getting pretty rampant anxiety on it. Therefore, I am back on Abilify for the time being.

With Abilify, though, I get pronounced side effects. The main ones I struggle with are akathisia and weight gain. I know it’s generally not known for weight gain as a side effect, but I’ve gained a lot when I’ve been on it throughout the years.

Anyways, I am curious if there are any other AP’s that are known for having minimal side effects. I’ve heard Rexulti is similar to Abilify but it usually carries fewer side effects. I am allergic to Risperidone as well.

I take Saphris and Rexulti together and I rarely get any breakthrough symptoms and although I don’t work I’m able to take care of myself otherwise. I don’t gain any weight and I’m slowly losing with making healthier dietary choices but I am overweight from previous aps that I’ve been on.

I am on rexulti and I get no side effects from it.

We have only these to choose from in the UK:
The following newer antipsychotics are licensed for use in the UK:

  • amisulpride (brand name Solian)
  • aripiprazole (Abilify)
  • clozapine (Clozaril, Denzapine, Zaponex)
  • lurasidone (Latuda)
  • olanzapine (Zypadhera, Zyprexa)
  • paliperidone (Invega, Xeplion)
  • quetiapine (Seroquel, Seroquel XL)
  • risperidone (Risperdal, Risperdal Consta)

Older antipsychotics licensed for use in the UK include:

  • chlorpromazine
  • flupentixol
  • haloperidol
  • levomepromazine
  • pericyazine
  • perphenazine
  • pimozide
  • prochlorperazine
  • promazine
  • sulpiride
  • trifluperazine
  • zuclopenthixol

Some side effects are dose related, and other side effects aren’t dose related.

I didn’t realize Geodon had a reputation for less side effects. Checking it out now, this is interesting.

I personally think geodon is a great medication. However, the UK where I live don’t administer it.

If they did, it would definitely be my back up medication

I’m on Lurasidone and have zero side effects and it works 100%

Haldol was the medication I had fewest side effects on.

I also have very few side effects on lurasidone also no weight gain. I am taking 120mg. Some people do get side effects from it. I still hear a voice like once a day.

I’m on cariprazine and haven’t noticed much in your way of side effects at all.
