I wish more people would hop on the discourse wagon already.
More people will. Unfortunately, in web development, change is very slow for multiple reasons. The top being that people almost never agree. For instance, Discourse is written in Rails instead of PHP. Most developers don’t like this because 90% of the web is written in PHP, and that’s what most every one uses and is used to. For customer usage, it gets worse, because most hosting companies do not support Rails by default, especially on the non-expensive shared hosting plans. Not to mention changes would require a Rails developer, and usually this is expensive…
But I couldn’t agree more. The forum software, and more-so the interface, is genius. Just…everything about it is perfect. As a developer and a user I’m more than impressed with it.
I’m also impressed that sz.com/szadmin chose this for the software. I can’t imagine having to keep refreshing pages for replies/new posts!
Like most software, there are things I like about Discourse and things I don’t like. It certainly is more dynamic, there’s a feeling of constant activity on the forum.
The software is several steps above the old Jive software but I still prefer vBulletin and to a lesser extent IPBoard.
Yall really know your boards and stuff. I find anything that’s not discourse to be unpleasant and old fashioned.
