This weekend I am starting generic Abilify instead of Rexulti. Any Abilify experiences to share?
Didn’t really work well for me. Maybe that was because I kept going off my meds, but even when I was compliant for a long period of time I still had a major episode. We did a blood test later, and the test revealed my liver metabolizes certain medications “ultra-rapidly” so the it was like I wasn’t even taking any med
It gave me scary episodes of blurred vision. My psychiatrist said that’s a rare side effect. Also made me speedy and more anxious. Did experience a decrease in paranoia and increased motivation. But I stopped it about a week ago with my doctor’s consent because of the blurred vision and speediness.
Made me like a zombie for over 6 weeks, gained weight as well, but then again, I’m known by the pdocs as being “upside-down” on all my meds. My grandma was told the same thing, so I know it’s just the way I process meds.
I was on it for a few months gained weight really fast
Made me really restless but worked well enough on the anti-psychosis side of things. It was the most weight-neutral med for me, don’t think I put on any weight when I was taking it
Did anyone feel like their thoughts sped up on abilify? This is an effect I would like to have, my thought process tends to be slower.
Did abilify motivate anyone to get out of the house more?
Abilify didn’t work to drag me out of acute psychosis. It made me restless. But it made me less into a zombie and less sedated than other antipsychotics, so if it would have worked I would have stayed on it. Pdoc proposes to try it again, now as a maintainance drug, to see if it works for that. She wants to immediately start me on the maximum daily dose though, 30mg, so I refused, because I am very sensitive to meds so this seems ridiculous.
It was the only med that worked for me.
I have to take a bcomplex to stop it increasing my appetite. I have to take l-theanine to help with anxiety. I have to take metformin as it increased my blood sugar. So, like any other med you should get regular bloid tests.
It’s better to take it in the morning instead of at night.
Most the meds have worked for me, but the abilify is the one without side-effects. It doesn’t speed up my thoughts, it slows them down, but I guess everyone is different. I felt psychosis was thinking too many thoughts as once which drove me crazy all day thinking at a million miles per hour.
i take it at night as my psych recommended because im feeling lethargic if i take it in morning
anyhow… no weight gain (unlike olanzapin) no zombie feeling (unlike risperidon) and generally no side effects
i dont really feel this med at all (except there is no psychosis of course) and i love it
why are you switching meds?
Abilify is great for me. I take risperidone injection every 2 weeks and Abilify in very low dose 0.5mg once a week. In high doses Abilify is crap for me, but in a low dose it works wonders.
Abilify gave me back my motivation. I can go out without freaking out. I don’t get angry anymore.
I found in high doses that I had no libido and had a gambling addiction with serious drug addiction, so just be careful.
In smaller doses I have non of these problems.
Please stick to the dose your doctor prescribes you.
I was on Ablilify for a year or so. I actually got an increase in physical strength from the drug. They eventually had to take me off it because it got me a little too amped up.
Got rid of my delusions. Only side effect I had was insomnia for the first two weeks of taking it.
I am switching bcoz abilify is much cheaper than rexulti. I also want to maybe lose some weight and improve motivation.
I’m at 20mg w/no titration. Since I was on 3mg Rexulti up till now hopefully this will be tolerable.
Motivation getting better is what I want, you said yours got better? That really excites me. I wanna get outta the house more.
Your libido issues are probably from the injection. Risperidone does that. Upping your abilify should lower prolactin though.
Hi @eduvigis.
No, I was on risperidone consta years back before I tried Abilify and I had no libido issues, risperidone actually made sex better for me. Then I relapsed and they put me on abilify, and that’s when I had libido issues.
But everyone reacts differently to meds.
I’m very thankful for abilify, it really helps mate.
I’ve had ongoing negative symptoms after an initial Zyprexa treatment phase. Before that, I used Abilify (which I’m currently taking) with good results in terms of motivation levels, attention span and hedonic “tone.”
Abilify kept me and my wife delusional enough that we blew it on a half million dollar bancruptcy…you think you’re stable, but you’re out of it…can’t explain it…good luck…it ruined my life.
