A Physics/Mathematics Thread 🧵

It’s a review/journey of the degree. There’s only one person who’s done it, and she did it like five years ago. So I thought it’d be a good idea to do one

I switched to audio and it’s easier to hide the swallows lol :joy:

@Andrey did you decide against doing modules with open university in the end, I remember you considered doing some

If I ever back to school I don’t think I’ll choose an online degree. Frightful as it sounds, I’d try attending classes in person and maybe bonding with a few classmates. Age gap will be the least of my troubles. I’ve become socially awkward.

But for now no decision is made. First I want to read a few science books and resuscitate my dead brain. And I keep postponing…

Ah okay, that’s fair but how come you’d attend a brick instead of online?

I got ya, makes sense. How long has it been since you graduated (if you don’t mind my asking), does it get difficult to remember stuff? Because in the last thread you had a good go at some of the calculus stuff that was on there!

Um I graduated engineering school back in 2007. So it’s been a while. I occasionally do some math or physics drills, mostly high school level, yet I’ve forgotten a lot of the curriculum.

Thanks for the thumbs up!

Science has advanced beyond what I feel able to catch up with, like ever. They analyze the shape of a photon now :scream:

I see, interesting; not too long before the financial crash!! Did that affect your graduate days?

No worries!!

Haha, very true, it’s definitely a huge commitment especially with a part time job so I can understand

I should have invested when the prices were down. I would be writing this post on the deck of a yacht rn.

Just finished the third out of four tutor submission problem sheets. Man that was stressful, especially the whole ordeal of scanning with an ipad and tryna get it on the PC - software is all always paywalled

What did you scan? I thought they’d send you all assignments in a digital format?
Or do you mean you wrote down the solutions on paper and then took photos?

Wrote the answers and scanned them into the PC! We have two types of assignments, one where we type the answers in; and a second, usually worth more marks, which we have to write out showing all the workings

Doing Matrices and it’s screwing with my head a lot so far, stressing me out! But in a good way

I recall linear algebra being unimaginable above 3d but then its just manipulating symbols and you can get by that way too

It’s got me really doubting my suitability for general relativity, and thinking nuclear physics is more for me :frowning:

I managed to sort it out, I feel unstoppable now mwhaha

Reading this Leonard susskind book on classical field theory and special relativity

Edit; it’s only been two days of smoke free but I’m certain I can read better (but it maybe because of zyban)

I was a rn and I remember reading that quiting smoking can trigger aggression and heighten frustration responses. You seem to be holding up good. Hang in there

Thank you man, it’s probably because of the Zyban/Bupropion or else I do go maniac trying to quit without anything

I’m also trying to smoke less these days.
Until about a week ago I’d smoke maybe 12 cigarettes a day. Now I’m down to 8-10. Some days are easier and some more stressful. I figure if I ever manage to taper off to about 4-5 cigs a day, I’ll have a shot at quitting completely.

Zyban (bupropion) is helping me a lot. I’m on three days without a cigarette and can probably continue bc the withdrawals are being controlled. Though I was just in the hospital for an appointment and I felt super anxious whilst there.

In unrelated note, I’m currently doing sequences and series in the module after which will be complex numbers. Still waiting for an assignment to come back

Yo yo, I lost the week because of insomnia but hopefully I’ll get a few hours of sequences and series in today. Gonna start now, which is unusual for me, usually I don’t feel alert enough till the latter parts of the day/evening start but today I think I’ll manage
