A lady screamed at me

I had to go to the UPS store to mail something. A lady was there with I presume her daughter who was in a wheelchair.

She was at the counter and finished her transaction. She started wheeling her daughter away.

So I approached the counter but was close to the wheelchair that was moving away

She started screaming at me at the top of her lungs for being rude. I felt so bad. I apologized very genuinely.

I thought since she was moving away it was ok for me to approach the counter.

Anyway, even after I apologized, she continued screaming at me. I finished what I was there to do and left while she was still going on about it.

I feel bad, but I also feel like I didn’t deserve that. Am I wrong?

You didn’t deserve it. It sounds like she has issues.

Edit: it sounds like she had issues and finally snapped

Don’t get down on yourself. You didn’t do anything wrong. :pig::pig::pig:

No, it definitely doesn’t sound like you were in the wrong. Even if you misjudged the space she needed- and I am absolutely not saying that- she was still extremely unpleasant. Maybe she’d had a bad day? I’m sorry she decided to share that nastiness with you.

Sometimes I get pushed in the metro. Once a drunk lady pushed me hard from behind, I almost fell. I just left her alone as she’s drunk.

You did nothing wrong. It is perfectly acceptable to approach as someone else is leaving. I can’t imagine what she thought you were trying to do but you know you meant no harm. There was no reason for her to yell. I’m sorry you had to deal with that.

She sounds like she was off. She could have untreated mental health issues. Hugs.

It sounds like you weren’t doing anything wrong, maybe she had a bad day and just took it out on you… I’ve done that

Thanks everyone. I’m glad I’m not belittling what I did. I felt bad but also like she blew it out of proportion. I appreciate your responses.

She’s probably just really stressed out and defensive of her daughter.

Not that she was in the right or anything…just trying to think of reasons she overreacted

I was hoping that’s what it was @POET . But even though I meant no harm, I do feel bad. I just don’t know if I deserved quite the reaction I got

Yea I don’t think you deserved it either. There’s really no reason so scream like that just saying maybe that’s why…she’s still in the wrong

If you offended her she could have told you so in a normal tone of voice. No need to scream.

Very true @77nick77 . I didn’t even look at it like that. In my mind, I was thinking the initial scream was enough

Ever since covid, people get antsy about the six feet distance thing. I respect that, as one who is immune compromised I don’t like it when people stand too close to me. But she should have been respectful about it. No one deserves to be screamed at, unless there’s a line to the bathroom and you just ate Taco Bell. :woman_shrugging:t4:

I don’t understand?
You mean she screamed at you because you got too close to her?

Ahhh she’s nuts…

You did nothing wrong

Yes. She started pushing the wheelchair away from the counter, and I walked between the wheelchair and the counter as I approached the counter.

You are nicer than me @LilyoftheValley. I do not respond well to that sort of abuse.

Sounds like she had problems. Maybe stressed by her daughter in a wheelchair.
