A few questions about schizophrenia

I was wondering if you can be considered schizophrenic if you’re not “emotionally flat” and you have a lot of feelings and you’re aware of how you feel. I honestly think they misdiagnosed me with schizo affective. Maybe schizophrenia. Im not depressed MOST of the time not even a third of the time and I’m not on meds. I have made several suicidal attempts but overal I dont feel depressed then after 4 years of depressive diagnosis they changed it to bipolar with psychotic features then bipolar type schizoaffective but the medicine made me manic I never felt like that in my entire life. I couldnt sleep and my eyes were twitching I stopped taking the meds and it all stopped. I see minor things and hear minor things nothing too scary mostly “delusions” im dealing with. So can someone be schizophrenic if they arent “completly detached” from reality and function? And is it just me or are most psychiatrists reluctant to change your diagnosis like ever? I have evident change in mood for an extended time but they won’t change it but I’m moving soon so at least I’ll get a new fresh slat and actually get listened to. I really feel like what I believe is real and also what I hear and sometimes see. I still think I’m destined to kill everyone and myself. Should I go inpatient or outpatient and just set up an appointment when I move if I want ssi temporarily?

You should go to the hospital.

With thoughts like that, you probs need immediate attention.

I guess the spectrum for schizophrenia is pretty big, you could be high functioning. You don’t have to be clueless to have schizophrenia or be emotionally flat to have schizophrenia although a flat affect may be common…

If you can’t work you should def check out seeing if you qualify for something like ssi, but if you can work I’d say work because you’ll most likely make a lot more money than being on ssi unfortunately…

If you think you’re going to kill others or yourself, go to the hospital ER and tell them that.

There are different degrees of sickness with schizophrenia. Not everyone has a flat affect. If you’re hearing and seeing things others aren’t, even if it’s only a little and you’re delusional, those are all symptoms of schizophrenia. So if your Dr thinks you have sz, you probably do.

The current DSM diagnosis allows for a wide spectrum of those diagnosed. To be diagnosed you literally just need to display 2 of the listed positive symptoms and 1 of the listed negative symptoms. That’s it.

I’m same as you I was never manic until they gave me geodon which made me manic and then they decided to change my type to bipolar  I do get crazy mood swings but I always saw it as more due to my ptsd bc I didn’t get them until I developed ptsd.

Hi Hannah. I have thoughts like this a lot too. I’m usually able to know when I’m a danger to myself and others and when I’m just fantisizing.

I’m not saying this behaviour ISNT concerning, however, I’ve been to the hospital multiple times because people say I should go since I have intrusive, persistent homicidal/suicidal thoughts.

Every single time (not kidding) I waited in emergency for hours just to be sent home. This actually really makes me worse so most of those times I start out hopeful thinking I could maybe get some help and/or relief of the thoughts, and I leave feeling extremely way more suicidal and in a much worse place.

I just wanted you to know since I’ve been in the same boat as you many times and (going to hospital) hasn’t been helpful at all for me. Once I even attempted suicide after they let me go home I was so hopeless.

I’m sorry if I sound disheartening, I just want you to know what could possibly happen. The psychiatric system is flawed and if there isn’t many beds available you could be turned away. It’s maddening that they ignore such serious problems but if you aren’t prepared you could get in a worse mind frame then before hand.

Again, I’m sorry this is happening. This is absolutely something you need to discuss with your Doctor, I would try and get in as soon as you can. (you need to tell someone. not necessarily the ER but absolutely your GD, a therapist, or a Pdoc, whoever you can go see ASAP)

(In my opinion, I always find going to my doctor for these sorts of things less stressful then picking up the courage to admit yourself to hospital then be turned away)

I’ve been to the hospital multiple times with thoughts like that and been hospitalized, every single time.

Its different for everyone, I think.

For some people, its more of a precaution.

I have homicidal thoughts all the time, but I don’t live at the ER, so I get what you’re saying,

Its just best to be careful.

Sounds like schizophrenia to me.

I’m just like that! I’m very emotionally attuned, even for a guy. I am aware of when I’m hallucinating and hearing voices. Though when sleeping my awareness fades away and I think it’s real. And also delusions. But I don’t really feel… completely disconnected. I do feel disconnected sometimes, more like spacey and I can’t remember what’s going on/recognizing people, or I’ll get lost somewhere.

But the thing is, schizo is a spectrum. I can’t diagnose you, so best of luck with your new doctors. Like many things, people are different and not everyone is the same. Schizophrenia is an illness that messes up your thinking and thought process, not everyone has hallucinations, etc. Just because something is common, doesn’t mean it’s set in stone for everyone!
