I had a highly competitive mother too. She was on constant competition mode with her two daughters, me and my sister. My mom entered 22 mile races, and won, in her age category, entered triathalons, she mountain climbed, bungee jumped, parachuted, snow sledded, travelled constantly, and all at the advanced age of 65- 79. She was bound and determined to outdo her daughters in everything. And she was way thinner than the both of us too. And she was complimented by everyone, universally. My sister and I were wallflowers compared to her. My sister and I both secretly hated her. She died two years ago. I have yet to shed a single tear over her death.

Yes, a mother is neglecting her job as a mother if her own ego needs insist on coming first.
