8÷2(2+2) Math question that divided the internet

Who here wants to answer this math question?

If I remember the order of operations correctly…

8÷2(2+2)=
8÷2(4)=
8÷8=1

I might be wrong, but that is how I was taught. I didn’t go through common core, so I don’t know how the younger crowd will solve this…

Multiplication and division are equal, so you would go left to right.

I thought the answer was 1. But it’s been a long time since I’ve done this type of math.

I think @Led is right. You do work parentheses first. I’m going to cheat and google it.

That’s not how I was taught, but I’m not a math whiz. It was always parentheses first, then the multiplication and then division…

I still don’t see how that could be correct. What is your order of operations?

You do what’s inside the parenthesis first. So you end up with 8÷2(4). Then, since multiplication and division are equal, you do left to right. 8÷2=4 ×4= 16

I don’t know, that doesn’t make sense to me. I wish i could ask my old college math teacher.

Here’s a math problem for you:

Let ℤ be the set of integers. Determine all functions f : ℤ → ℤ such that, for all integers a and b :

f (2 a ) + 2 f ( b ) = f ( f ( a + b ))

Don’t ask me to solve it. I have no idea

I suppose I was taught 1917 math. I don’t remember multiplication and division being equal. I guess I need to go back to school.

I could do this on paper, I think…:grinning:

You have my brain churning, math always made me hypomanic.

I took algebra 1 and 2 in college I think but I don’t remember ever going over functions. Do you study that in algebra?

I apologize. I loved trigonometry in my engineering classes

I believe so…

I don’t know the new math at all. It was just coming out when I went to college. I would have gotten the answer you got, too. It’s all a matter of how you express the problem. It’s a foreign language to me, now.
