20g of reishi extract

Hi! I’m new to the forum.

I was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder after I had some psychotic symptoms. These symptoms started appearing around the same time I was dosing with 20g of reishi extract from Hyperion Herbs.

I was wondering if anyone on this forum has experience with such high doses of reishis, and whether or not it cause psychosis, not unlike a stimulant such as methamphetamine.

Have you taken 20 grams of it?

I don’t think so it was a pill not dried. You took 20 pills in one day? Anyways no psychosis side effects according to medical websites, WebMD.

Ask your Dr to be sure. Does reishi raises dopamine?

I have seen no studies about it raising dopamine, but I did feel pretty good when I would take it.

It was a bag of reishi extract powdered. I took spoonfuls of it for like 2 weeks straight. There are ~100 grams in a bag of the reishi extract I was consuming. So yeah, like 20 1g pills of red reishi extract.

Stop taking the Reishi right away. Throw away the reishi. I have taken supplements before, and all of them always conflict with my medications and caused psychotic break. You see the pattern yourself too from it happening right when you took it.

Thanks for your concern, but I do not consume reishi anymore, I was just curious about others experiences with these things

I say its good to be careful with anything at all. A caffeine drink can make me psychotic or manic sometimes. Occasionally I take kratom, which isnt known to make you psychotic, but it does if I take more than 5-8 grams. It’s best to stay away from anything that made things worse as usually its not coincidence, just independent brain/ body chemistry.

Thanks for your insight! The dose makes the poison!

Supplements are a lot safer than chemical medicine in general, but if you take 20grams of reishi that is a lot. I think a recommended dose as a dietary supplement would be no more than 4 grams a day.

I have taken many medical mushrooms(also reishi) while on medication and have not had any interactions or relapses from it, but I have never taken more than the recommended dose.

It is possible that the reishi at a very high dose as you have taken can have contributed to pyschosis as it has a impact on the brain and mood. I would be careful not to take very high doses of supplements unless you get guidance from a professional like a herbalist.

Were you on meds while taking 20g reishi?

No meds. I wasn’t prescribed any. No diagnoses either. Funny story; I did this twice; the first time I was diagnosed with schizophrenia/schizoaffective, the doctor eventually said that the psychosis I had was started by Reishi. Then, a year and a half ago, I took a little extra of a strong Reishi extract, coupled with He Shou Wu, and I started sleeping for 2 hours a day.

You should stop using it then.

To be more clear: the diagnoses was wiped clean and I was taken off Court Ordered Treatment and all medication. I closed services with my clinic.

I started taking all sorts of supplements, took a strong 40:1 reishi extract, He Shou Wu, and a couple other supplements. Pine Pollen was one. My dopamine was wayyyy too high. Be careful with supplements. It can push anyone over the edge, if you take too much. Most are safe at the recommended dosages; don’t try to do anything that requires sophisticated knowledge of supplements, genes, and the brain/nervous system. I may have altered my genes: my anxiety has disappeared and I no longer have depression.
