The stench was everywhere. Four people came to my place and could not smell anything.

I think the term you are looking for is olfactory hallucination.
I have not had the gas thing for a while . The other day I did smell a funny tobacco smell though.

I smell/see smoke every so often. The gas thing is quite often now, however I do work in a autoshop at school so that might be why.
