Doesn’t everyone just want to be ok? And I know I’ve already learned from and been encouraged by this forum. Our common link is our shared exeriences, and even when those aren’t exactly the same, there’s still a level of commonality with eachother that I don’t get from the general public. We’re all headed in the direction of ok.

just ‘ok?’ lol

i completely agree with you but i would hope we are headed for more than just that (no-offense intended)

Well put, buddy. Some of us aim at being dependent. Some of us aim at being INdependent. (Some even aim at being “counter-dependent” or “inter-dependent,” but that’s too complex a topic for this thread.)

You and I like “facts.” Other people like other stuff.

I got this in an email the other day. I love it.

(I was thinking about using it as my avatar here, but… No, I don’t think so.)

It Doesn’t Bother Me Yo Yo …

we are all going somewhere, are you saying we are all going to different places?

why cant we all aim higher than all of that 'Transcend our mental incapabilities’
join the ‘we can’ boat rather than the ‘we cant’ are you a doer or a don’ter?

common goals and interests thats what i am talking about, something where we are all going in the same direction, a focus, a plan.

“Facts” are not subjective and can’t be changed. Most of the medical community even openly state that they only have medical “opinions”.

“There is no such thing as chance. Chance would be a negation of the law of causality, which demands that even the temporal meeting of two separate causal chains still has a cause. Chance would destroy the possibility of life; it would call back man, who is the only one ready to overcome evil, from his path. Chance would make telepathy impossible, which is nonetheless a fact. It would nullify the connectedness of things, the oneness of the universe. If there is chance, then there is no God” - Otto Weininger

By means of free election or by means of compulsory coercion?

And if by the former, how? By means of education?

And if by education, how will that come about if that aim does not suit the aims of those who decide what “education” will be?

(Just askin’.)

I’m with darksith on this. I would say we all aim for happiness but happy can’t face up to the tragedies in life, so the milder term “contentment” will do.

Been there, done that. Good place to be. (And a much better place to be than where I was from '94 to '03.)

Dream big but there’s no gurantees. Some things you know you can’t do, other things are within the realm of possibility to do but you don’t know until you try.

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
The courage to change the things I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference.

Reaching high can mean different things to different people. You’ve gone to school which many people can’t do. We’re all born with different gifts or we learned how do stuff from experience. I can’t tell you how high you can go, My theory is that most people have potential.

When I got out of the hospital after being locked up for 8 months, I had no plans for the future. Zero. I was just happy to be free. By luck, I got in a nice group home and a vocational program. Hey, I didn’t think I was anything special. I just did what was suggested and I went along with the [programs I was in and followed orders. But counselors asked me if I wanted to do little work projects and I said sure. I was told to go out on a gardening crew with other mentally ill people and so a crew of us drove around and went to private homes and I mowed lawns and swept patios and raked leaves for an hour or two a couple times a week. Then a counselor said I should lead a crew and I said sure so I was in charge of 3 or 4 people. I did that for awhile. They told me to do mailing projects so I stuffed flyers in envelopes for two cents an envelope.

I don’t want to write too much here. But they told me to run a cash register. I didn’t want to but I did it anyway. 9 months later one day out of the blue they said, " How would you like a job"? Out of 13 people they picked me. They saw something in me that I didn’t see in myself. Si i started working. About that time I thought, “Why don’t I go to school”? No one told me to do it. I just went to the nearest college and enrolled myself. I worked my job for 4 years. I’ve been working ever since and I need four more classes for my degree.

No one ever told me, " You can’t do this or you can’t that". I just do things. And people help me and support me. I guess my point is that people think I can do things so I do them. I’ve been very lucky to get so many opportunities but I also put in backbreaking (literally) work and effort.

I agree wholeheartedly. But since scientific facts are always stated as “tendencies” and agreed upon by scientists to represent observations only at the time and place they were observed (regardless of what the volk do), I’m sticking with them… rather than anyone’s beliefs or opinions. (Shrug.)

YES!!! (Hope that’s enough exclamation points to get to 15 characters.)

We should be aiming towards Iraq and Syria

OKAY that was a really ignorant post of me

But we should go to war with ISIS…

STOP ISIS

(sorry to make this thread about ISIS)

i think maybe they saw your potential, we have all got potential and its something that we need to understand, we all need to be encouraged how to reach our full potential as human beings,

my dad was a very good example of a person who encouraged others (especially myself) to reach my full potential and go beyond the realms of possibilities (with the right meds regimen) he knew what i was capable of and he built on that,

education is huge, the ability to learn, the ability to research our condition and being able to understand it,

i realise we will all have a different walk in life, we are all unique individuals but i was wondering why we shouldnt all have the same common goals in life,

@PinCushion contentment is a really good one, to be content, content with ourselves, inner peace, how we reach that though is another thing entirely, what makes us content, we should be asking ourselves these questions. what could make us content,

imo we have to reach for the prize, the ultimate goal in life, we need to be rewarded somehow for what we have done

like the rats in a maze there is always a prize at the end, why shouldn’t life be like that for us as well?

My goals and aims shift… After I was dx’ed, my goal was to get back into university, preferably into a specific renowned MSc programme. When I passed the selection procedure and was admitted this was a huge thing for me. Then the goal shifted, it became to survive the programme, in terms of grades, and just keeping up. One course at a time. As things progressed, I started to take for granted that I was in the programme now, still happy about it, but did not quite see it as an achievement anymore, now it was just what I did. New goals replaced old ones. I was managing fairly well. New goal became not just to survive the programme, but to thrive. Grades became better. Now I aim to graduate with distinction, from the situation I am now in, my grades are more than sufficient for it, just the thesis I am working on needs to be good enough. So it is within reach, but I haven’t got it yet…

Small steps at a time, and the goals shift with each step… Seems to me you’ll have to aim for things that are within reach. Think of it as trying to grasp an object. If it is way out of reach, trying to grasp it is just silly - if it is too far away, you are not even distinguishably grasping for it, but just making a random movement in thin air.

Great stuff here.

Thanks. As someone who is aiming for a doctorate, and is excited and terrified at the same time, this is inspirational for me. I’m going to bookmark it and come back to it as needed.
