CONCLUSION
It is suggested that the above considerations certainly
point to a very strong possibility that schizophrenic
symptomatology could be explained as a chronic intermittent
toxemia which is most likely, in the majority
of cases, caused by glycoalkaloid poisoning following
potato ingestion both in subjects genetically predisposed
to schizophrenia and also in subjects not so genetically
vulnerable but more sensitive to glycoalkaloids. In particular,
their action on membrane permeability would
not only harmonize with the ‘membrane hypothesis’
elaborated by Horrobin et al. (58) but could also account
for the apparent variable Irish regional geographic incidence
– a phenomenon very difficult to explain other
than by the intervention of a variable environmental
factor, most likely in the diet.
Despite a vast amount of research into epidemiology
and aetiology culminating in a plethora of hypotheses,
the writer can find no reference to the potato (Solanum
tuberosum L.) as the major causative environmental factor
but possibly not the only one – in this disease of theories.
It may be more than a coincidence that in Ireland,
where the potato has been very widely consumed –
virtually the staple diet – schizophrenic prevalence rates
‘have been amongst the highest in the world for over a

This is very interesting, especially since potatoes are closely related to Nightshade.

So. I forgot about this post, was relaxing watching TV, and decides to make some food. This food had potatoes in it. Guess whose symptoms almost immediately spiked rather drastically?

Very interested in this theory.

Yet again, I was 100% symptom-free until I ate a few handfuls of potato chips. I forgot that they were made of potatoes until I saw one on the bag, which led to a Dr. House epiphany type moment for me lol. So I’m officially on a no-potato diet.

I really believe in this theory, and I’m convinced that it is NOT just placebo. My symptoms always spike before I remember this thread or that potatoes could be bad, which leads to me posting, but not after. Definitely not placebo.

Im Irish and i dont know about the potato thing. I eat a lot of potatoes and its just dosnt get to me as the cause.

I had a batch of home fries that damn near put me in the hospital. The darn things were so powerful I needed to take a prn.
