I started a meet up group

I started a meet up group and paid USD 4.99 for a month.I named it Depression and Social Anxiety support group with my city named in it.I created this group as suggested by my psychologist and I made one today,I was a little worried after making it because I had some other non MI related meetup,I might be stigmatized if they know about my group, anyway should I continue with this meetup, hopefully I get positive feedback for starting this meetup…

One of the things lacking in our area is a social group for mental illness. Has been a few plans to start one but never gets very far. Much Kudos for starting one of your own. :yellow_heart: :blue_heart: :purple_heart: :green_heart:

I can still change it to other types of meeting.Soccer or Gaming,I have had a few soccer group friends already,Gaming group seems boring but Mental illness support group around my city seems a good thing just that I am afraid I didn’t have much organize meetup and I don’t know what kind of people would I meet…

There are such groups around, including those put together by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI, see https://www.nami.org/), Emotions Anonymous (see http://www.emotionsanonymous.org/), Adult Children of Alcoholics / Dysfunctional Families (see http://www.adultchildren.org/), Adults Molested as Children (see http://amac.usclargo.com/), and lord only knows how many more. I learned to be cautious about some of the individual meetings and the people in them, but on the whole, they’re pretty helpful.

Those are support groups rather then social groups. We have support groups here also but no real social groups.

What is the difference between support groups and social groups?

I would love something like that in my city. My doc told me about a MI group in my area, but it just turned out to be for AA. That was an awkward night…

I would love the chance to talk to other schizophrenics in person.

I am still in contact with one of my friend I met in a SZ support group,we met yesterday and we went shopping and chatted just like friends, mental illness and medication started our conversation,we talked about gaming and our problem too…

you inspired me to join a local group in my area

thx :+1:

Social groups tend to do things recreational rather than just support. Go to the movies. bowling go out to dinner etc in a group.

Because most mentally ill people are such hermits it’s a lacking area that we need to address more. Having cut a lot of people out of life to grow ie drug users. My social life’s non existent so have looked into it.

No problem and good luck to you joining a group…

Good luck with your meetup group! I’ve joined quite a few meetup groups but have never actually been in person. Most of the people that go to the MI meetups in my area are older adults (40+) so i doubt that I would have much in common with them.

What a great idea.

Seems like anyone could do this who wants to start meeting people locally.

Seems like it might be good to partner with a local support group or clubhouse and get them to pay for it.

Incidentally,

If you can also search on “schizophrenia” or “mental illness” or “NAMI” etc. in the Meetup search to see if there are any existing meetups somewhat close to you.

Here is a search I did on all their system for “schizophrenia”

http://www.meetup.com/find/?allMeetups=false&keywords=schizophrenia&radius=Infinity&userFreeform=San+Francisco%2C+CA&mcId=z94101&sort=default
