It’s a different disease caused by a single gene, however the vector used to introduce the corrected gene was very safe and very effective, which will be useful to any gene therapy that needs to enter the brain. They were even able to use it intravenously, no drilling the skull. It also worked in adolescent mice, not just infant mice. It will be starting human trials soon.

So, mostly this is just good news for the field of genetic medicine in brain disorders.

Any progress is good @far_cry0, the welfare of other people is no less important than mine.
@twinklestars correct me if I’m wrong, but I think the first step of gene therapy will
be treating disorders caused by a single defective gene, and schizophrenia is far from that.
Although who knows?

Yes, I think you’re right, single gene diseases will be the easiest to treat and that will happen first. But, once the method has been established as safe we may be able to treat multiple gene defects at once.

This article is on how DISC1 gene causes problems with a protein. It’s possible other genes cause problems with the same protien. That’s a possible target for gene therapy, or they may be able to develop a drug to increase levels of the problem protein.

Someday, we will be able to have individual treatments that sequence your genome and correct just the genes that have errors in them, but that is a long way off.
